Parking and Registration
You may park on the large car park to the rear of Barden Mill. Please enter the Tea Room to register. All registered walkers can enjoy a complementary tea or coffee, courtesy of Barden Mill.

Walking Route

  1. Leave Barden Mill, take care crossing the main road and turn right, follow the main road until turning left down Lower Manor Lane.
  2. Continue walking down this Lane until reaching a dead end. Turn right down a narrow footpath. Continue on this path which is slippery in places with barbed wire on the left hand side.
  3. Cross an iron bridge, go left through a wooden gate, down some steps with a handrail to rejoin the path. Follow the path past a farmhouse on your left and join a tarmac road running between two fields.
  4. Carry on until you come to a “T” junction. Turn right at this junction away from the motorway onto another quiet road. You may encounter some light traffic here – so walk on the right hand side of the road.
  5. Continue until coming to the cross roads at Wood End. Cross carefully to the other side of this junction into Holme End. Keep to the right hand side of this road with the river on your right. Carry on until coming to a large metal gate and bear right around some properties with a market garden on your right, until you reach a stile.
  6. Go through the stile into the field, continue ahead with the river on your right, keep away from the sloping banks and sheer drops into the river especially if you are with children.
  7. Go under the motorway bridge and through the stile/gate at the end. Continue forward and at the end of this path turn left onto the tarmac road of Quaker Bridge. After a few yards turn right in front of some houses (Hill St) onto a narrow road.
  8. Continue on this road passing a large bungalow on your left. Before the road starts to climb uphill turn right down an unmade track and go through a large gate (open it carefully it’s in bad repair, close it afterwards) into a field keeping the river on your right hand side.
  9. Continue along the riverside path, over the stile and then cross a wooden bridge. Keep following the riverside path, which can be boggy in places (climb the slope to the left to avoid the worst parts if necessary). Go through the gate at the end of this path, onto a grassy uphill narrow path which can also be slippery if wet.
  10. At the end of this path carefully cross Churchill Way (an industrial estate tarmac road) continuing ahead down a tarmac path/cycle way, which continues into Park Avenue. Keeping Victoria Park on your right walk up to the crossroads junction.
  11. Carefully cross this junction and then after a few yards turn right through the park gate and have a refreshment stop alongside the duck pond (if needed). Exit Victoria Park by the top left hand gate back onto Park Avenue. Alternatively – Continue walking along Park Avenue.
  12. Continue up Park Avenue, shortly after leaving Victoria Park turn right at the footpath sign after passing a large wooden gate. Follow the path round and behind the back gardens of some       houses and through a small wooden gate.
  13. Pass under the concrete road bridge (take care here, it’s darker and the terrain is rougher). At the end pass through an iron kissing gate, follow the river again on your right.
  14. Continue along the riverside path, passing three metal gates before turning right onto a tarmac road, continue along riverside path passing the back of Nelson and Colne College on the opposite river bank.
  15. Enter Calder Vale (a tarmac road) and follow it into Sandy Lane up to the main road and turn       right. Go over the road bridge and pass the Pendle Community Church on the right. Just after the church cross to the opposite side of the main road using the pelican lights crossing.

Alternatively: If you would like to have a meal /refreshments carry on past the front of Nelson and Colne College walking towards the roundabout to visit the Thatch & Thistle public house (be careful and watch the traffic speed before crossing the by-pass). Afterwards return to the pelican lights crossing and cross to the opposite side.

  1. Continue ahead on the footpath leading under the motorway roundabout junction and go       through three subway tunnels. After the third subway turn left following the footpath uphill until it meets the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.
  2. Turn right onto the canal towpath and keep walking until you almost reach Barden Mill.

Finish
Just before reaching Reedley Marina, cross to the other side of the canal using the No 135 Oliver Ings Bridge, walk uphill away from the canal keeping the green fencing on your right. When you reach the entrance gate turn right into the Reedley Marina Complex.

Keeping on the tarmac roads, follow signs and marshals’ instructions to make your way to the Lions Check Out point in the Barden Mill Tea Room. Consider enjoying a meal or snack in either the Kingfisher Restaurant or the Jack Moors Tearooms.
